A vaulted ceiling extension to a growing family's new home

PITCHED EXTENSION

This project involved the expansion and internal reconfiguration of a suburban house to provide adaptable and inviting spaces for a growing family. Designed to be completed in phases, the approach ensures the project can evolve in harmony with the family’s needs and circumstances over time.

The new-build extension transforms the rear of the home: a pitched roof matched internally with a vaulted ceiling creates a sense of spaciousness and architectural interest. This design choice enhances what might have been a conventional, shallow layout, elevating it into a visually engaging and dynamic space. Rooflights punctuate the pitched roof, strategically placed to draw natural light deeper into the home, ensuring key areas are bright and inviting throughout the day.

A visual and physical connection to the garden is achieved through three large sliding glazed doors along the full width of the rear wall. This expansive opening dissolves the boundary between indoors and outdoors which emphasises how important the role of a garden is for a young family; becoming an extension to the internal play areas.
