Transforming a compact, narrow terraced house  by maximizing every inch

NARROW HOUSE

This renovation project revolved around the idea of maximising every inch of this terraced house’s narrow and compact footprint. The tight proportions of the home prompted the use of custom cabinetry to optimise storage without sacrificing style. Features such as floating shelves in chimney recesses, sliding triangular under-stair shelving, and suspended shelves on ropes add both practicality and visual interest, creating an efficient and aesthetically pleasing approach to organisation.

Given the limited space, the idea of maintaining a separate outdoor furniture set was impractical. Instead, the design introduces a large rear extension with expansive French Doors that span the entire width of the back wall. These doors create a natural flow between the interior and exterior, allowing the transition of furniture on warm days. The choice of flooring material further enhances this sense of continuity, ensuring a harmonious aesthetic from inside to outside.

A large rooflight has been strategically placed to bring much-needed daylight deep into the long, narrow footprint, enhancing the sense of openness and airiness throughout the home. The interplay of colour with natural wood textures in the cabinetry adds warmth and a tactile quality to the interior. A playful juxtaposition of materials is evident in the bathroom and kitchen, where different styles of hexagonal tiling ties the two spaces together, creating cohesiveness.
